7 p.m. lecture:
The Biology of Beer: How the sciences of molecular biology, microbiology, and biochemistry all started with beer.
Over 5000 years ago, in ancient Mesopotamia, human beings were enjoying a brand new invention of biotechnology: Beer! Of course they didn’t know that at the time, but they did know how to make beer. Over the millennia man has tirelessly worked to understand, improve, and perfect the beer-making process. Along the way we have discovered entirely new fields of study including enzymology, microbiology, biochemistry, and molecular biology. Today, the study of fermentation is hardly complete and some of today’s cutting-edge technologies owe their existence to beverage that has captivated the human imagination for thousands of years.
